Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition

Today Volkswagen announced it would be ending production of the current and third generation of the Beetle in July 2019 and to commemorate the end of the iconic model Volkswagen will be releasing the Final Edition trim.

The current generation Beetle was introduced in 2011 and is based on the MkVI golf platform. The New Beetle was released in 1997 after a long time away from the brand. Who knows, Volkswagen may bring the Beetle back in the future.

Hinrich Woebcken who is head of VW Group of America offered some hope that the Beetle may return in the future in the form of an electric car.  While he said there were no immediate plans to replace the Beetle, he does not want to say “never”.  Volkswagen plans to market the I.D. Buzz as the retro-inspired vehicle in their lineup.

The Final Edition Beetle will be offered in coupe or convertible and SE and SEL trim levels. The SE couple will set buyers back $23,000 and the SEL convertible will cost $30,000. All models will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbo four mated to a 6-speed automatic making 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.

So long and farewell.
